warmth

As I let wool slide through my fingers
creating garments for my children,
I keep thinking about warmth.
The smooth movement of yarn
over wooden needle,
conjuring images of women who couldn’t
go to the nearest store and buy a hat
for a dollar.
Who knit out of necessity, and not just
pleasure.
And like all the little things I do,
to create a homey atmosphere,
I am grateful for the ability
to provide for them
more than what is needed.

I clip her leash on, we walk into the snow.
My lungs breathe in the air so crisp
it is cleansing,
listening to her big paws crunch through
the icy crust.
I stand there and watch the snowflakes come down,
swirling big as though we’re in
the perfect scene of a snowglobe,
covering the dirt, the grass,
wiping the smudges away.
They fall so quickly, white rain drops
caught in my hair
and my heart beats a little more quickly
the excitement of childhood remembered.
